INDIANAPOLIS — The 28th annual Ann Katz Festival of Books & Arts returns to JCC Indianapolis from Oct. 25 through Nov. 17, bringing authors, artists, filmmakers and culinary talent together for a celebration of storytelling, culture and community.
The festival takes place at the JCC, 6701 Hoover Road. A pass covering all events costs $54, and several programs are free.
“It really is a way to use arts and culture as a means to build community and connection,” said Jodi Greenwald, director of arts and education at JCC Indianapolis.
JCC Indianapolis has served the community since 1914. The 160,000-square-foot facility offers fitness programs, aquatics, early childhood education and summer camps.
Greenwald said the JCC strives to provide a welcoming space for people of all backgrounds and faiths.
“The JCC is really that third place for everyone who comes, so where everyone feels at home,” Greenwald said.
That mission is reflected in the festival’s lineup, which features opportunities for cultural exchange, learning and connection through literature, art and food.
The festival opens Oct. 25 with Vecinos: A Latino and Jewish Celebration, a free community event featuring music, dance, art and food in partnership with Arte Mexicano and Latino Expo. Coszo restaurant will provide kosher Latino fusion cuisine.
“What better way to build community than through food,” Greenwald said.
On Nov. 1, Rabbi Sandy Eisenberg Sasso and artist Siona Benjamin will present “The Jews of India,” a book launch and gallery reception exploring the traditions and legacy of the Bene Israel community. The event is free.
Bestselling author Bruce Feiler will discuss “A Time to Gather” on Nov. 7, sharing insights from a 50,000-mile journey examining how rituals can help combat loneliness and strengthen communities.
On Nov. 8, Dr. Barak Benaryeh will present “The Vet Will See You Now,” offering insights into veterinary medicine.
The festival concludes Nov. 17 with cookbook author Adeena Sussman and “Zariz.” The program will feature a cooking demonstration highlighting her Middle Eastern-inspired recipes.
Individual tickets and festival passes are available through the JCC Indianapolis website. Several events are free.
