High school seniors planning to apply to college have an opportunity to save money this week as public colleges and universities across Texas waive application fees.
The fee waiver applies to public institutions across the state, giving students a chance to submit applications without paying the usual fees. Private universities are not included.
College application fees can range from $50 to $100 per school. For students applying to multiple colleges, those costs can add up quickly. Applying to 12 schools could save a family as much as $1,200.
Jessica Buscemi, lead advisor for Texas Connections Academy, said students should approach the application process strategically and focus on finding schools that align with their academic goals and qualifications.
Applying early is also important. Missing deadlines is one of the biggest mistakes students make during the college application process, Buscemi said.
Beyond submitting applications on time, students should pay close attention to their essays.
Buscemi recommends using the essay to highlight personal strengths, accomplishments, talents and passions. Students should also discuss challenges they have overcome and explain how those experiences helped them grow.
The goal is to give admissions officers a better understanding of who the student is beyond grades and test scores.
Students planning to take advantage of the fee waiver should check individual colleges’ admissions websites for eligibility requirements, application instructions and deadlines.
The waiver provides an opportunity for Texas high school seniors to explore their options while reducing the cost of applying to college.
